What to expect from a consultation

An initial consultation will include a physical assessment to establish the extent of the problem and likely diagnosis. Treatment would be based on the findings of the assessment.

Physiotherapy treatment can be in a number of forms: Exercise therapy in the form of a tailored exercise programme; also hands on treatment such as manual therapy and occasionally massage.

The initial stages of treatment may look at pain reduction and early strengthening exercises to improve joint stability and movement. This allows a graded return back into normal activities and in the long term will prevent re-occurrence of the symptoms.

Physiotherapy is not a passive form of treatment and following your initial assessment you will be expected to perform the exercises provided as directed in your exercise plan.

At the core is the client’s involvement in their own care, through education, awareness, empowerment and participation in their treatment.

Physiotherapy focuses on removing the cause of the problem as opposed to superficially treating the symptoms. This process may take some time, but the results are often more permanent with less chance of the problem returning.

I developed shoulder pain following an incident at work, I had difficulties lifting my arm above 90 degrees and when putting my hand behind my back. Andrew assessed my shoulder and provided me with some exercises to do. At first I was sceptical because the exercises were painful, however a few months later my shoulder pain has almost gone and my movements are much more free.
